Swiss stun holders Canada at world ice hockey championships

Players compete during the IIHF Men's World Championship group B ice hockey match between Canada and Switzerland in Paris on May 13, 2017

Switzerland stunned two-time defending champions Canada with a 3-2 win after extra time in their Group B clash at the world ice hockey championships on Saturday.

It was the first defeat for the Canadians who remain top of Group B with 13 points after five games -- two points ahead of the second-placed Swiss -- and still on course for the quarter-finals.

The champions had gotten off to a flying start in Paris with Ryan O'Reilly and Mitch Marner scoring in the first period.

But the Swiss -- cheered on by thousands of vocal home fans at a packed Paris-Bercy Arena -- piled on the pressure and it paid off with Fabrice Herzog and Vincent Praplan scoring late to send the game into extra time. Herzog scored the winning goal.

Russia now remain the only unbeaten team after claiming a fifth victory with a 6-0 win over Slovakia in Group A.

Russia have the best attack in the championships with 27 goals. Evgeny Dadonov was man of the match on Saturday with two goals and an assist.

In Cologne, Germany kept their chances of qualification alive in Group A by overpowering Italy 4-1 with the ticket to the final phase set to be played on Tuesday against Latvia.
